The building is located on the north side of N. 11th St. across from Memorial Fieldhouse, which is located between N. Alder and Union Avenue.
The building has been named Weyerhaeuser Hall, in honor of longtime friends of the university Bill and Gail Weyerhaeuser.
Construction began in May 2010. Faculty will move in during the summer of 2011; classes begin in August, and a building dedication ceremony will be held on Friday, October 28.
Yes. The new building includes improved facilities for clinic patients, including a new outdoor mobility park. The clinics provide services for approximately 300 patients annually. An important part of the community’s health care network, the clinics provide students with opportunities to put theory and skills into practice. Puget Sound is among the leading colleges in the Pacific Northwest for the placement of occupational and physical therapists.
The center for health sciences is designed and built to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Standards, using sustainable materials and adhering to stringent environmental guidelines.
The center for health sciences building has been sited to minimize the removal of trees. A goal of Puget Sound’s master plan is to highlight the presence of the trees on campus by creating Commencement Walk—a pathway that will wind from Jones Hall to Memorial Fieldhouse through the grove of fir trees.
The university provides 55 houses as part of its residential life program, in addition to nine residence halls.
The building will house the undergraduate departments of exercise science and psychology; graduate programs in occupational therapy and physical therapy; the interdisciplinary program in neuroscience; and outpatient clinics.
Occupational and physical therapy have been located in South Hall, a temporary building that has been removed to make space for the extension of Commencement Walk from Collins Memorial Library to Memorial Fieldhouse. The exercise science department has been located in the Music Building, and this space will revert to use by the School of Music. The Human Resources office will move into the space vacated by the psychology department on the lower level of Howarth Hall.
