The Phyllis and Lawrence T. Nelson botanical specimen grove was given in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary by Mr. and Mrs. Nelson's son, James L. Nelson in 1986. Lawrence was university housing director and Phyllis was a UPS Women's League vice president. The plants were transplanted in 1998 to their current location in the "President's Woods" from their original location near the old tennis courts.
