What was your first, or an early work experience that impacted your career path?
Immediately following undergrad I was a campus ministry intern for the organization I joined as a student at Pitt. This was my first full-time “salaried” job after college, so I learned a lot about work-life balance in a job where I was not paid per hour. I learned here that my passion was in helping college students develop during a pivotal time in their lives.
What did you learn in your major field of study that you currently use in your work?
My history major helped me to learn by investigating multiple sources. Historical learning comes from a variety of sources providing different or similar perspectives, making up the whole story as we see it. This is a lesson that I utilize in every interaction with a student or colleague and in writing any report or piece of information I share.
What is your favorite location/event/hidden gem/thing about Tacoma?
The place that comes to mind most is Owen Beach in Point Defiance Park. When I first moved here in 2011 I got homesick pretty frequently. Heading down through the woods to this beautiful beach on the edge of a mid-sized American city would remind me of the beauty and mystery that brought me to the Pacific Northwest in the first place. It was also a good place to be alone without having to feel alone.
