We asked Emma...

How would you describe your role and organization to a college student?
The US Geological Survey (USGS) is a science research Bureau of the Department of the Interior (DOI), this means that we do research to support and inform the mission of DOI and the other bureaus (Fish and Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.). I work for the Ecological Studies branch of the USGS. Most of our work is focused around the potential impacts of offshore wind energy development on marine bird species. I love my work because it gets me to cool places doing interesting science, the outcome of which can inform import climate change issues and management decisions.

What can a student expect to experience by job shadowing you?
I spend a lot of time in the field during the summer months collecting data. Unfortunately, our work during January isn't as exciting. You can mostly find me doing computer work. I will tell you all about the work we do though, show you some tools and techniques we use, and introduce you to other marine scientists in Santa Cruz.

ATTENTION: Students shadowing this host will be required to bring a state-issued form of identification with them to the job shadow. Please contact CES if you have any questions or concerns.

Why do you want to host Logger Students?
I loved my time at UPS and feel indebted for the experiences I gained there. I am always looking for ways to give back and this seems like a great opportunity!

While in school, I was inspired every day by my fellow students. I would love to spend a day with another inspirational Logger! I hope that I can teach them a few things about what I do and I am confident I'll learn some things from them as well!
