For over 100 years, media groups on campus have provided an outlet for students to get involved and express themselves to create a culture unique to the university and to the greater Puget Sound community. The multiple media outlets on campus are significant in allowing students to address topics of controversy, relevance, and importance to the student body. All forms of production – photographs, newspaper, music, literary pieces, and scientific discovery – have helped preserve the time and events of each year; capturing photos of the new construction on campus, writing a news story of a significant world event, playing a new chart-topping song, and more, provide the opportunity for students to document their lives and the changes throughout campus, while also gaining unique hands-on production skills. All forms of media have helped to create an open environment for inspiration, reflection, and growth. The traditions of Puget Sound are carried on and documented by the media groups on campus. KUPS 90.1 FM, radio station

KUPS 90.1 FM

KUPS is a non-commercial, educational radio station licensed to the Board of Trustees of the University of Puget Sound and operated by the Associated Students. KUPS is 100% student-run and broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, serving the greater Tacoma area with programming in a variety of genres.

The station has been nationally recognized by The Princeton Review, Collegiate Broadcasters, and the College Music Journal as being one of the most popular college radio stations and having some of the most excellent student DJs.

Students of all experience levels can try-out for a DJ position. Students select their shows based on the genres that they are interested in but collaborate with one another through music preview gatherings. Additionally, there is always a bin of free CDs outside the KUPS door in Wheelock Student Center, a way for KUPS to share the love of music with all students.

The Trail, newspaper

The Trail student newspaper

The Trail has 90+ year publication history. Its circulation is approximately 2,000 copies per issue with an estimated readership of 5,000 students, faculty, and community members. The Trail publishes approximately 20 issues per year, releasing long-awaited new issues almost every Friday.

As a publication, The Trail serves two primary functions: to act as a medium for student opinion and to act as an archival record for the university. Since the inception of the Trail in 1910, a copy of every Trail issue has been preserved in the Collins Memorial Library archives.

The Trail provides a full picture of campus happenings. Each issue is informative, opinionated, and entertaining. In addition to ‘Letters to the Editor’, sport teams updates, and campus security reports, the most popular features are ‘Hey You’ section and the ‘Combat Zone,’ which turn heads weekly.

Photo Services, campus photography

Photo Services

Photo Services is the core of photographic activity throughout campus. The paid student photographers take photographs weekly for The Trail. Staff members take photos and have access backstage to campus concerts, lectures, art galleries, sporting events, and capture new perspectives on everyday campus happenings of students, faculty, and academic work. Crosscurrents, literary magazine

Crosscurrents student literary and art journal

Crosscurrents is Puget Sound’s premier literary and arts journal. Since 1958, Crosscurrents has exhibited the finest works of art and literature that the university has to offer. Featured works come from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, offering a creative outlet for many individuals and has appeared in a variety of forms, although most commonly as a bound journal. Elements, scientific magazine

Elements Science Magazine

Elements science magazine is a student-run publication for general audiences featuring articles on student research and interesting scientific topics, including science satire. The Elements magazine is published biannually, at the end of each semester and is made possible due to student contributions.

Students can get involved as writers, editors, photographers, and illustrators, and develop skills surrounding design, editing, writing, and management. The Elements scientific magazine has developed a new meaning to finding and displaying art within science, and sharing scientific knowledge for the betterment of the community, placing a modern spin on the scientific salon. Wetlands, gender, sexuality, and identity magazine

Wetlands Magazine

Wetlands Magazine is the University of Puget Sound campus publication dedicated to the critical interrogation of gender, sexuality, ability, age, class, race, intersectional identities, and social justice as well as the celebration of related art, poetry, literature, and performance. Wetlands Magazine aspires to be an inclusive, accessible, critical and safe forum for student advocacy.

Wetlands Magazine is staffed, edited, and, as of 2014, funded entirely by students. Because of the nature of a student publication, the magazine is itself a project constantly under reconstruction, always dynamic in response to the concerns of the campus community. We hope to facilitate and contribute to a comprehensive reflection of unique experiences and thoughts in our community through the medium of a student publication oriented toward the advocacy of marginalized students and the celebration of their identities.
