The University of Puget Sound recently hosted the Washington State Special Olympics Spring Games, bringing soccer, swimming, and track athletes to campus alongside the vital FUNfitness health screening program. Backed by thousands of volunteers, including Puget Sound students, this marks the second year the university has hosted the games — a partnership that Liz Corwin, FUNfitness clinical director and Puget Sound assistant professor, said has transformed the experience for both Puget Sound students.
The defining variable in the rapid rise of autonomous artificial intelligence may not be a background in computer engineering, but rather the critical thinking skills obtained by a liberal arts education, according to a panel of industry experts convened as part of the recent University of Puget Sound Business Insights event.
The University of Puget Sound recently held the Puget Sound Symposium on AI & Privacy, bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to address the ethical and legal challenges posed by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence. The event successfully fostered critical dialogue across different sectors about how AI impacts personal data, influences governance models, and redefines the boundaries of mental privacy.
On May 30, a small orchestra at Carnegie Hall will perform an original song written by University of Puget Sound graduate Madison Hening ’26. Hening’s piece, titled “Lily Rose,” was written for a class as part of the Lullaby Project, which pairs new and expectant parents with artists to compose personal lullabies for their families.
The University of Puget Sound will launch a new interdisciplinary emphasis in Artificial Intelligence and Human Values in Fall 2026, offering students a structured pathway to understand AI not just as a technology but as a force reshaping democracy, creativity, health care, law, and human relationships.
For the last five decades, the Tides Tavern, founded by Logger Peter Stanley ’69, has been a beloved spot to grab a bite on the Gig Harbor waterfront. The historic eatery, which opened in 1973, entered a new era in January 2026 after it was acquired by the Anthony’s Restaurants chain. Amy Burns, president and CEO of Anthony’s Restaurants, said the company would maintain the beloved aspects of the Tides, including the menu, the team, the dockside service, and the award-winning women’s restroom (if you know, you know).
When Jake Elorduy ’26 arrived at the University of Puget Sound, football was his entry point. A lifelong athlete, he expected a run-of-the-mill college experience, centered on his experience on the field. What he found went far beyond the game.
“It’s hard to get a full grasp of what campus looks like if you’re not physically there,” Elorduy said. He grew up in Sacramento, California, and hadn’t traveled to the Pacific Northwest before touring Puget Sound. “Once I saw the community, that really drew my attention.”
Tacoma, Wash. — The University of Puget Sound has named John Johnson, Ph.D., as interim vice president for institutional equity and diversity, effective July 6. In light of President Isiaah Crawford’s upcoming retirement on July 1, 2027, Johnson will serve in this role during academic years 2026-27 and 2027-28.
