Alumni College Session 1B | "Doodling, Brainstorming & Calligraphy" Professor Zaixin Hong, Art History  9 - 10:15 a.m. | Wyatt Hall. Room 109

  • Step back in time and try this course that introduces first-year students to art history through doodles, brainstorming, and the art of calligraphy—and how doodling can facilitate critical and creative thinking.

Alumni College Session 1C | "A Tale of Two Pandemics: Reckoning with the Costs of Influenza (1918) and COVID-19" Professor Nancy Bristow, History and Race & Pedagogy Institute Leadership Team  9 - 10:15 a.m. | Thomas Hall, Room 366 and Zoom

  • In this class, Professor Bristow will discuss how the influenza pandemic of 1918 offers a valuable lens for making sense of our own experiences since 2020. In both cases American exceptionalism, a commitment to individualism over community needs, and systemic racism produced vastly inequitable experiences of these traumatic events. Though in the aftermath of the earlier pandemic American public culture quickly moved on, exhibiting a profound amnesia about the scourge, today we still have the opportunity to think through what we have experienced and how it might guide us in reckoning with, and rethinking, our practices and the values that undergird them. The session will be interactive.

Alumni College Session 2A | "Through American Eyes: Understanding DuBois' Double Consciousness & Navigating U.S. Society While Black" Associate Professor LaToya Brackett, African American Studies and Race & Pedagogy Institute Leadership Team 10:30 - 11:45 a.m. | Wyatt Hall, Room 101

  • This session allows the audience to engage with W.E.B. DuBois' The Souls of Black Folk text, and to unpack his concept of double consciousness collaboratively. Upon collective understanding, the class will discuss the conditions afforded to Black Americans today by utilizing the concept and interrogating the trajectory of our society's race relations over the last century. The professor will provide representation of double consciousness using a newspaper cartoon image, a short video clip about type casting in the film and television industry, and a discussion of Colin Kaepernick's NFL protest.

Alumni College Session 2B | "AI & Language Processing" Associate Professor Adam Smith and Associate Professor America Chambers, Computer Science  10:30 - 11:45 a.m. | Thompson Hall, Room 395

  • In this course, we will teach a brief introduction to artificial neural networks, geared toward a general audience. Neural networks form the heart of many technologies currently in the news, from self-driving cars, to game-playing bots, to generative AI like ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion.
