Mochitsuki, or traditional mochi pounding, is a thousand-year-old Japanese ceremony. Come to see a live demonstration, including hands-on participation!

As part of our Spring 2026 Japanese Film Series, we invite you to a screening of Hayao Miyazaki's film Porco Rosso! Set in fascist Italy in the late 1920s, the story is about a cursed WWI Italian fighter pilot named Porco Rosso who is doomed to live out his life as a pig. 

Taiko drumming is a powerful, high-energy tradition that is moving through its loud sound. Bon dancing is used to honor, welcome, and comfort the spirit of deceased ancestors. Performances of both are included. 

We will be trying three to four different types of high-class Japanese-style teas. You are invited to taste, learn, and explore through this demonstration hosted by Professor Mikiko Ludden. 

Let's hear from graduates who majored/minored in Japanese about the lives they are leading after graduation, their work, and whether they are using Japanese! Japanese refreshments will be served.

Every Sound I’ve Ever Made is a devised theatre piece which interrogates the distance women’s voices fill when memory and identity divulge. The revision of a previous piece by the same name, Every Sound I’ve Ever Made is an intimate portrait of one woman’s journey to reconcile a familial legacy of silence and resistance.

Sophie, a 13-year-old terminal cancer patient, and her family have been upended by her illness, a sudden move back home, and an adversarial family bond. Through the, often silly, worldview of Sophie we travel through the process of grief for a disrupted family and the ugly face of mortality.
