Blues Vespers: Stephanie Anne Johnson and Jeff Fielder
Blues Vespers is a long-time Tacoma tradition that happens roughly once a month, inviting campus and community members to gather and hear great local live Blues, a poem or two, and a little something to think about. Our April Vespers welcomes back Tacoma's own Stephanie Anne Johnson, performing with Seattle guitarist Jeff Fielder. Hosted by the University Chaplaincy with Blues Vespers founder Pastor Dave Brown.
Ash Wednesday: Imposition of Ashes
For members of the campus community (and guests) who observe Ash Wednesday, University Chaplain Dave Wright will be available to distribute palm ashes in the lobby of Wheelock Student Center from 8:30-10 am. If you would like to receive the imposition of ashes that day but cannot make that time, please email Dave (dwright@pugetsound.edu) to arrange an alternative time between 10 am-3:30 pm.

Black History Month Keynote with Dr. Joy DeGruy
To close out Black History Month, African American Studies is proud to host nationally and internationally renowned researcher and educator, Dr. Joy Angela DeGruy, on the Puget Sound campus. Dr. DeGruy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication, a Master's degree in Social Work (MSW), a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, and a PhD in Social Work Research. She authored the book entitled “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing”, which addresses the residual impacts of trauma on African Descendants in the Americas.
Loggers Since 1965: A Conversation about the Black Athlete Experience at Puget Sound with Louis Smith '69
African American Studies hosts alum and founder of the Black Student Union, Louis Smith ‘69, to share insights from his experiences as one of the first Black student-athletes at Puget Sound during the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s. The conversation will be moderated by African American Studies alum Donovan Wilson '22.
Alternative Spring Break: Habitat for Humanity Info Session
Habitat for Humanity is hosting an info session this week for students interested in an alternative Spring Break opportunity! This program offers a meaningful way to spend your break by working alongside peers to build affordable housing and support local families. Participants will gain hands-on experience in construction and teamwork while contributing to lasting community change. The info session will cover trip details, volunteer expectations, and how students can earn Experiential Learning credit (0.25) for their participation.
Blues Vespers: 2026 Harmonica Showcase! (NEW DATE)
Blues Vespers @ Kilworth Chapel kicks off its 2026 season with a harmonica showcase. Coordinated by guitarist Tim Sherman, with Mark Dalton on bass and Conrad Ormsby on drums, the Showcase will feature harmonica performances by Stacy Jones, Joe Cook, and Jonathan Pittman.
