University of Puget Sound student Tdohasan Sunray ’27 received a President and Chancellor’s Student Civic Leadership Award during an April 17 ceremony at The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. The award, sponsored by the Washington Campus Coalition for the Public Good, recognizes outstanding college student civic leaders from consortium schools. Sunray was joined onstage by Gov. Bob Ferguson, Puget Sound President Isiaah Crawford, and nominating Professor of English Tiffany MacBain, who said Sunray’s commitment to community building and listening sets him apart.
“Tdohasan truly cares about the communities he belongs to; he is an excellent listener who respects the opinions of others and is willing to reconsider his own,” said MacBain, who has served as Sunray’s academic adviser and instructor. “He is especially committed to giving back to Native communities and has found many ways to do so, whether he’s been in Tacoma or Oklahoma.”
Sunray is also a Matelich Scholar, the highest merit recognition offered by the university. Scholars are chosen, not only for their academic excellence but also for their commitment to values such as leadership, community service, and personal integrity. Having grown up in tribal communities in Oklahoma, Sunray has had his perspective and values profoundly shaped. He believes that the principles instilled in him during his childhood — such as resilience, respect for tradition, and a dedication to helping others — are reflected in the honor he has received.
“Growing up in my tribal communities, the idea of ‘iyikowa,’ or generosity, is intrinsic in everything we do,” Sunray said. “I want to continue to lead a life that adheres to that teaching.”
