Summer Music Programs
If you are entering your junior or senior year, it is ideal to utilize summers to prepare for your next step beyond Puget Sound. Summers should now be a time when you gain performance, teaching, working, or internship experience specific to your career aspirations. This selective list provides a sampling of programs for which you might consider applying or auditioning.

ARIA International Summer Academy
(For violin, cello, flute, and clarinet)
This program is designed to provide an intensive and in-depth experience for serious students aged 16-28. Workshops, master classes, lectures, and private lessons provide the participants with a wealth of information on technique, musicianship, intelligent practicing, and career topics. Located in South Hadley, MA.
Aspen Music Festival
This is a nine-week festival with over 350 events. It includes more than 750 students and 200 artist-faculty. Opportunities are available for all wind and string instruments, guitar, voice, composition, audio recording, and conducting. Puget Sound has consistently sent students to this festival located in Aspen, Colorado.
Atlantic Music Festival
AMF provides complete financial coverage for tuition and housing during the four weeks of residency. The Fellowship Program seeks gifted young artists for the following disciplines: woodwinds, brass, percussion, harp, piano, strings, opera, composition, conducting, and audio engineering between the ages of 18 and 34.
Banff Summer Music Festival
Banff Summer Music Festival includes several different programs—a chamber music residency, percussion residency, collaborative piano internship, master classes for strings and winds, piano master classes, brass ensemble residency, and the Banff Festival Orchestra. Puget Sound faculty and students have attended this festival in the past. Located in Banff, Alberta, Canada.
Bay View Music Festival
(For chamber strings, winds, brass, collaborative piano, and individual voice)
Located on the shore of Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay in northern Michigan, the Bay View community is situated at the heart of one of the United States' most beautiful resort areas. Students find the natural beauty of the area, the experience and dedication of the artists, and the warm support of the community a wonderful and rewarding experience. The Festival lays claim as the longest continuously operating chamber music festival in the United States.
Berklee College of Music
Berklee College offers several summer programs, including a Five-Week Summer Performance Program, an Acoustic String Festival, Bass Lines, Berklee in Dublin, Berklee in Los Angeles, Berklee Percussion Festival, Brass Weekend, Business of Music, Grief and Loss Therapy Institute, Guitar Sessions, Music for Video Games, Music Production Workshop, Summer Institute for Piano Teachers, Saxophone Weekend, Songwriting Workshop, Stage Performance Workshop, and a Vocal Summit.
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp
This is an employment opportunity: A summer school of the arts located on a 1,400 acre campus in Michigan’s Manistee National Forest, offers fine arts education for all ages. Each summer, the principal camp program serves more than 5,400 gifted elementary, junior high, and high school students with diverse programs in music, art, dance, and drama while offering more than 175 performances during its Summer Arts Festival. The program seeks motivated college musicians and artists to serve as mentors and role models for students, and they are looking for music education students in particular.
Boston University Tanglewood Institute
Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is recognized internationally as a premier summer training program for aspiring young musicians and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world’s great symphony orchestras. Under the guidance of distinguished professionals, and in the presence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), students are immersed in an atmosphere of extraordinary music making fueled by high artistic standards, rigorous programming, and a rich legacy of learning and performance. BUTI offers programs for all orchestral instruments, voice, piano, composition, and conducting, ranging in duration from two to six weeks.
Bowdoin International Music Festival Summer Study
(For cello, double bass, harp, percussion, piano, viola, violin, and composition)
This program is designed for serious performers with advanced musical ability who are motivated by and comfortable with a significant amount of independence. Students work to advance their skills through private lessons, masterclasses, and through chamber music. There are three programs, instrumental (piano and strings, including guitar and harp), woodwind, and composition. Located in Brunswick, Maine.
Brass Chamber Music Workshop at Humboldt State University (BCMW)
Welcoming brass musicians of all ability levels to a one-of-a-kind opportunity to play chamber music. BCMW’s unique workshop setting and extensive music library provide participants with the opportunity to play in a variety of ensembles, ranging from trios to dectets, with coaching by some of the finest brass players and educators in the country. Each evening the participants perform for each other in a casual and supportive environment. In addition, there are special-interest sessions on brass-related topics, and ample time for participants to put together groups of their own making for further ensemble playing. Located in Arcata, CA.
Brevard Music Center
Four hundred students each summer enroll in the summer program, located in Brevard, North Carolina, divided into high school and college divisions. Brevard offers five programs in orchestral studies, piano, composition, voice for high school students, and opera for college students. The programs vary between six and seven weeks, and all require an audition. Financial aid is available. Two Puget Sound faculty, Professor Maria Sampen, Associate Professor of Violin, and Timothy Christie, Affiliate Artist in Violin, are on the faculty.
Chautauqua Music Festival
The Chautauqua Music Festival has three distinct programs for instrumental music, piano, and voice, with each program seven weeks in length. Instrumentalists participate in a full-sized orchestra that rehearses daily, along with chamber music, six private lessons per student, and a minimum of twelve hours per week of reserved practice time. Piano students will have a weekly curriculum that includes private and master class lessons, chamber music coaching with both the teachers in the program and internationally-renowned artists. Vocalists take part in voice lessons, role preparation, diction classes, and vocal classes. Two operas are performed each summer. Located in Chautauqua, New York.
Colorado College Summer Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments, no voice)
The 45 advanced student musicians who attend the festival participate in small chamber ensembles, festival orchestra, master classes, auditioned concerto readings with the orchestra, and private lessons. The festival student concert series presents two festival orchestra concerts and numerous small ensemble performances, all open to the public. Students range in age from high school seniors to graduate students. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Creative Musicians Retreat at The Walden School
A week-long festival in New England, the Creative Musicians Retreat (CMR) is offered for composers, improvisers, performers, electronic musicians, choral musicians, and music teachers who want to spend a week immersed in music.
DECODA Skidmore Chamber Music Institute
(For strings, piano, brass, and woodwinds)
The Decoda | Skidmore Chamber Music Institute enables young musicians to explore leadership and community service through the intensive study of chamber music. Under the guidance of Decoda artists, students will learn how to fully engage their audiences and communities through interactive chamber music performances while improving their own performance and public speaking skills. Located in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Located in the magnificent Charlevoix region of Quebec, Domaine Forget is a summer-long International Music Festival, offering some thirty concerts (classical, jazz, new music, and dance), about twenty master classes open to the public, Academy concerts and recitals, and musical brunches. Events take place at Le Salle Françoys-Bernier, a 600-seat concert hall constructed in 1996 by Le Domaine Forget and known for its remarkable acoustics. The festival features classical music, dance, and jazz; and concerts feature well-known artists in each of the fields of the arts over a two-month period.
Eastern Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments, no voice)
The Eastern Music Festival is a wonderful orchestral training opportunity for students ages 14-22. The Festival is a five week program which has both an orchestral and piano program. The piano program provides up to 21 students the special opportunity to study with some of the best teachers in the country, along with master classes, and even classes on everything from technique to the history of the instrument. The orchestral program features two student orchestras which rehearse six times a week, resulting in a weekly concert. Audition is required. Located in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival
The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival offers a multitude of programs in all areas of the arts—not just music. For strings, woodwinds, and brass, there are chamber music opportunities, orchestra, wind ensemble, and jazz studies. Also offered are classical and world percussion, accordion and harmonica, gospel choir and gospel piano, classical voice and choral groups, cabaret singing, and opera and musical theatre. Located in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Festival Napa Valley
The tuition-free intensive program is held in the state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center at Napa Valley College. It features daily coaching and master classes led by visiting soloists, principal players of the Festival Orchestra NAPA (hailing from orchestras such as the MET Opera, Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras), as well as conductors Stéphane Denève, Martin West and Joel Revzen. Located in Napa Valley, California.
Fine Arts Summer Academy
(For brass, strings, guitar, and voice)
FASA is a faith-based musical event designed to transform you into a consummate professional, able to command a stage and execute your craft with excellence. This isn't your typical summer music program — FASA takes the best of popular music and fuses it with challenging technical training and Broadway-level stagecraft for concert experiences like no other. Located in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Heifetz Institute dedicates its revolutionary program to the educational concept that young musicians “can be taught to communicate the emotion of music, beyond mere technical agility and beautiful playing.” Students spend six weeks in the summer participating in two private lessons, chamber music coaching, and a series of one hour classes each afternoon in public speaking, voice, drama, movement, and freedom of expression. Located at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia.
Hot Springs Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments and conductors)
The Hot Springs Music Festival provides experience in orchestral, chamber, solo recital, vocal, choral and chamber opera repertoire. Located in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas.
Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute
(For strings and piano)
This program is a chamber music intensive experience, approximately 4 weeks in length, open to advanced high school and college level string and piano players. Audition only. Located in Leavenworth, Washington.
IES Vienna Summer Music Program
IES Vienna’s summer program is designed with the music performance major in mind, but it is also suitable for other talented musicians. There are three components to the summer program, in which everyone is involved—music history on a featured topic that varies year to year, performance studies, along with study of the German language, ranging from a beginning to advanced level. Audition is required for the performance studies portion of the summer program. Puget Sound has sent a number of students to this program in the past. Located in Vienna, Austria.
Interlochen Center for the Arts
This is an employment opportunity: “Located in northwestern Michigan, Interlochen Center for the Arts offers arts education programs for students in grades 3-12 and adults of all ages. Interlochen also hosts hundreds of concerts and events and is home to two award-winning public radio stations”.
Intermuse International Music Institute and Festival
(For violin, viola, cello, and piano)
This is a ten-day chamber music program for strings and piano (ages 14-23) that takes place each July on the beautiful campus of Mount Saint Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. IIMIF has been lauded by as an exceptional summer music experience; students work closely with renowned performers and teachers through a series of activities specifically designed to balance artistic, technical, and personal development. All participants receive three hour-long private lessons and daily chamber music coaching sessions. IIMIF's limited enrollment (max. 30 participants) ensures an intensely challenging and yet entirely supportive experience.
International Academy of Music
(For piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, and bassoon)
This program changes location each year to a different international setting. It is a 10-day program that features four private lessons, chamber ensembles, master classes, public performances by selected students, and concerts featuring performances by faculty and guest artists. Location changes yearly.
Kent/Blossom Music Festival
(For strings, piano, horn, bassoon, clarinet, oboe, and flute)
The Kent/Blossom Music Festival is an advanced training institute for professional music training operated by Kent State University in cooperation with The Cleveland Orchestra and Blossom Music Center presenting public performances by distinguished artist faculty and talented young musicians. Located in Kent, OH.
Killington Music Festival
(For piano and strings; also accepts pre-formed chamber groups/small ensembles)
Each summer students gather at Killington from institutions such as the Juilliard School of Music, Boston Conservatory, The New England Conservatory, The Manhattan School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, Eastman School of Music and the University of Arizona. Performances by the faculty and invited guest artists have made the Festival a mainstay of summer culture in the region. The young musicians who attend the Killington Residency Program are graduate, college and talented high school students. Located in Rutland,VT.
Kinhaven Young Artist Seminar
(For strings, winds, and piano)
The Young Artist Seminar focuses on chamber music repertoire and will also include works performed by our conductorless chamber orchestra and our chorus. Each chamber group studies one work during the week-long program and receives daily coachings by our faculty. Other musical activities may include master classes, studio classes as well as opportunities for singing and organized discussions on musical topics. Admission is open to serious musicians and pre-formed groups, ages 18-28. Located in Weston, VT.
Kutztown Summer Chamber Music Festival
(For strings, percussion, winds, and piano)
The festival will offer one week of intensive study to ambitious high school and college age musicians, including daily private lessons and chamber music coaching. The participants will have the opportunity to work on solo repertoire, learn and perform works from the core chamber music literature, and receive instruction on audition preparation. The faculty consists of artist/teachers from Kutztown University as well as guest artists from the New York City Ballet Orchestra, Princeton University, and the Manhattan School of Music. Located in Kutztown, PA.
Lake City Violin Intensive
The Lake City String Academy is an intensive one-week violin course designed to provide collegiate-level violinists (age 18 and up) with an opportunity to rehearse, practice, and perform in the mountains with a gorgeous view and time to focus. Participants will have the opportunity to have daily private lessons and master classes. At the end of the week, students perform a solo concert at the Mary Stigall Theater at the Moseley Arts Center. Located in Lake City, CO.
Lake George Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments, piano, and voice)
As a performance based festival, LGMF bridges the gap between faculty and students. There are no teachers or students, private lessons, master classes or organized studios. Rather, a unique roster of distinguished artists and young musicians at the cusp of their professional careers collaborate together in chamber music ensembles, a full orchestral setting, and enjoy informal social gatherings to connect with colleagues of past and present. For one week each August, musicians attend solely as a way to advance intellectually, artistically, and professionally; working closely together in a tight-knit community and nurturing atmosphere performing daily open rehearsals, free public concerts, and outreach events in this picturesque' end of summer finale.'
Madeline Island Music Camp
(For winds and strings)
The Madeline Island Music Camp focuses on chamber ensembles and has two different camps—one for strings, and the other for woodwind. Public performances take place every weekend. In addition to daily technique classes, coachings, and private lessons from members of the Prairie Winds, seminars are held about topics such as peak performance, communication, and audition preparation. Madeline Island is located in northern Wisconsin.
Marrowstone Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments)
Marrowstone Music Festival, founded in 1943, is the largest and most comprehensive summer orchestra training program in the Pacific Northwest. Every summer nearly 300 musicians, aged 14 to 25, come from over 30 states and several countries to study with internationally acclaimed faculty at the campus of Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. During this intense two-week program students are immersed in orchestral and chamber music rehearsals, master classes, and repertoire building professional performance opportunities.
The MasterWorks Festival is an intensive four-week festival for advanced and passionate students of the classical performing arts, sponsored by Christian Performing Artists' Fellowship. Together, world-class and gifted students present a series of brilliant performances on the beautiful campus of Cedarville University. Programs include Orchestra, Piano, Theatre, Vocal Intensive, Wind Intensive, and String Intensive. Each year 250 students from around the globe participate in this unique festival that combines artistic excellence and biblically-sound teaching. Meadowmount School of Music

The Meadowmount School of Music was founded in 1944 by violinist Ivan Galamian and offers string players and pianists an intensive seven-week program of private study and chamber music. Students work daily with internationally-acclaimed faculty members and guest artists, and participate in weekly masterclasses and concerts on and off campus. Located in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.
Miami Music Festival
With training institutes in Orchestra, Opera, Piano and Conducting, the MMF program also includes a pioneering Career Institute and a Professional Division incorporating the Miami Wagner Institute. MMF receives nearly 1,500 international applicants each season, selecting around 300 participants through a rigorous audition process. MMF has welcomed students and faculty from over 25 countries and many of the world’s most esteemed music institutions. Located in Miami, Florida.

Music Fest Perugia, the largest music festival for young musicians in Italy, is held every summer in the beautiful city of Perugia. We are a performance institute, our emphasis is on providing the possibility of performing, and experiencing an array of outstanding professors from all over the world. One of our unique features is that so many of our participants get to play with an orchestra.
Music Academy of the West
(For orchestral instruments, piano, and voice)
The Music Academy of the West invites 140 young classical singers and instrumentalists for eight weeks in Santa Barbara, California, to study with guest artists, conductors, and faculty. Auditions are required.
A festival for instrumentalists, singers and dancers in the beautiful city of Narni, Italy. Young artists come together in the heart of Umbria for a two-week program that combines musical study and an immersion into the Italian culture. The result is a rich program of events, which will include lessons, workshops, master classes, conferences, exhibits, guided tours, and concerts and shows in the most prestigious halls and in the most suggestive archaeological sites of Narni.
National Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments, conductors, audio engineers, music administration)
The Festival, a division of OuterArts Maryland, Inc., combines world-class mentor musicians and gifted pre-professional apprentice musicians for an intense Festival experience the first two weeks of each June. All apprentices receive full scholarships and housing in private homes. The two groups rehearse and perform side by side in orchestral, chamber, solo recital, choral and chamber opera repertoire.
The National Repertory Orchestra
(For all orchestral instruments)
The NRO is an intensive fellowship that works to equip young musicians for orchestra music careers. Two full orchestra concerts are performed each week, along with smaller chamber concerts. Located in Breckenridge, Colorado.
National Orchestral Institute
(For all orchestral instruments)
Located at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, the National Orchestral Institute is a four-week program dedicated to orchestral performance, chamber music, and professional development. Over 80 orchestral musicians are selected to participate each year. Students get to work with internationally renowned conductors in rehearsals and performance, as well as distinguished principal musicians from major symphony orchestras and chamber groups to develop ensemble skills and orchestral excerpts. At the end of each week, students perform in a public concert at the magnificent Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
New England Conservatory
(For flute, jazz and blues instruments, and voice-opera)

Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (Yale School of Music)

Norfolk opens its doors to advanced individual instrumentalists as well as preformed ensembles. Participants are offered a wide array of intensive coaching and performance opportunities, including the extraordinary opportunity to perform alongside the Artist-Faculty in the Norfolk Festival’s main concert series. And all Fellows perform during the Festival as part of the popular Young Artists’ Performance Series. Located in Norfolk, CT.
Northwestern University Bienen School of Music

Opera on The Bluff
Opera on The Bluff is a light opera artist in residence summer program for young artists at the beginning of their careers. Performers are selected from a competitive audition process to spend two months at University of Portland studying under top vocal coaches and artistic directors as they prepare for a professional production. The curriculum includes master classes, voice lessons, and workshops and culminates with a three-week production run. Located in Portland, Oregon.

Orvieto Musica, founded in 1994, is a 3-week intensive chamber music festival in Umbria. Enrollment is selective and limited to 8 singers, 2 pianists, and 8 string players. The program includes daily coaching, master classes, numerous performances in historic venues, advanced language study, and the opportunity to be immersed in small town Italian culture.
Pacific Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments, conductors, and voice)
The Pacific Music Festival (PMF) is an international educational music festival that includes an educational program featuring top musicians of the world as faculty, and fostering young musicians chosen through auditions from all parts of the globe. For roughly 1 month, these richly talented Academy members receive instruction on high-level craft from the faculty as well as a wealth of experience, in addition to experiencing international exchange through music, thereby deepening international mutual understanding. Location varies.
Perlman Music Program
(For strings and piano)
The Perlman Music Program (PMP), run by Itzhak and Toby Perlman, provides seven weeks of exceptional musical training to young string players of “rare and special talent.” Programs are led by a world-class faculty on Shelter Island, New York. The Summer Music School is open to ages 12-18, but anyone older than that may apply for the Chamber Music Workshop, Travel Residencies, or Life-Long Mentorship from PMP.
The Philadelphia International Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments and voice)
The Philadelphia International Music Festival (or PIMF, as colloquially known in the industry) is a summer music camp offering students from throughout the U.S. and abroad the unique opportunity of spending up to 14 days immersed in classical music education and performance with members of the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra.
The Rome Festival Orchestra
(For orchestral instruments, piano, classical guitar, and voice-choral and opera)
Instrumentalists and singers are invited to study, live in the center of Rome, and to perform with the Rome Festival Orchestra, Opera, Ballet, Concert Chorus, and chamber music ensembles. The age range of the participants is from early 20s to early 60s. Located in Rome, Italy.
Round Top Festival Institute
(For all orchestral instruments and piano)
The festival is six weeks long, and is for advanced musicians 18 and older. Symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, chamber music, and solo repertoire are included in the program. About 85 participants are permitted through audition and recommendation. Those accepted are also encouraged to enroll in the concerto competition. Located in Round Top, Texas.
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
(For all orchestral instruments)
Located in the town of Rendsburg, Northern Germany, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival welcomes musicians up to age 26 from all over the world. Students play in the Festival Orchestra, founded by Leonard Bernstein in 1987, and the chamber music program, which includes a variety of seminars and workshops. Every year students get the chance to work with international professional conductors, principal musicians from German orchestras, and professors from European music academies.
Sewanee Summer Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments and piano)
The Sewanee Summer Music Festival is an internationally acclaimed summer festival which combines a month-long program for advanced music students with a professional concert series. Each summer at Sewanee, over 180 exceptionally talented young musicians gather to study, perform, and share their musical lives. Students perform at least twice weekly, in both orchestra and chamber music, and attend faculty and guest artist concerts, master classes, and other special events.
Snow Pond Music Festival
(For all orchestral instruments, jazz instruments, and piano)
The Snow Pond Music Festival (SPMF), hosted on the beautiful campus off New England Music Camp, attracts high-level college, graduate, and post-graduate level musicians from around the world. Each summer, the highest caliber performers and educators are invited to join the SPMF faculty to present highly-specialized music programs with the sole purpose of inspiring and challenging the next generation of musicians. Participants work one-on-one with professional musicians in rehearsal, workshops, and private lesson formats. Located in Sidney, ME.
Summer @ Eastman
(For all orchestral instruments, voice, and music education)
Summer@Eastman offers nearly 50 programs and courses every year including: a summers-only masters degree in Music Education; collegiate classes in Music Theory and Musicology, and Summer Jazz Studies; as well as various institutes and workshops. Located in Rochester, NY.
Summit Music Festival
(For strings, piano, woodwinds, and voice- lieder and aria)
The Summit Music Festival is New York's summer institute for extensive chamber music and instrumental training. This three-week festival offers chamber and instrumental music programs for high school, college, and young professionals (ages 14 and up); an adult program for the avocational musician is also offered. The festival features a daily array of special events, such as concerts, lectures, and master classes throughout the three-week music festival.
Tanglewood Music Center
(For all orchestral instruments, piano, composers, conductors, and voice)
The Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship Program is the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer academy for advanced musical study. The TMC offers an intensive schedule of study and performance for emerging professional instrumentalists, singers, conductors, and composers who have completed most of their formal study. Located in Boston, MA.
Taos School of Music
(For strings and piano)
Taos School of Music is located in beautiful northern New Mexico. Participants are professionally oriented, ages 18-29, and play violin, viola, cello, and piano. Audition is required and the program lasts approximately eight weeks.
UBC Summer Voice Workshop
(For voice only)
Singers have the opportunity to interact with UBC School of Music Faculty, as well as professional Classical Musicians from all over the world. Participants take part in Group Classes, Private Lessons, Coaching with Pianists, Masterclasses, Small Ensembles, Yoga, Movement Classes, Diction work, and a Final Concert. Singers of all levels of vocal training are invited to join.
UNCSA Alexander Technique Workshop
The North Carolina Residential Workshop is open to anyone interested in the Alexander Technique who wants the opportunity to work with a variety of highly skilled Alexander Technique teachers in a community setting. Optional classes will be offered in related studies such as, Yoga, Sports Skills, Relaxation, Authentic Movement, Voice, and Performance Skills. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is located in Winston-Salem.

The Verbier Festival is an international program that includes the Verbier Festival Academy, Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. Students have the opportunity to work with world-famous conductors and musicians of orchestral and chamber experience in rehearsals, sectionals, and a series of masterclasses. The vocal program focuses around one opera with a semi-staged performance at the end of the Festival. Located in the mountain resort of Verbier, Switzerland.

Students will be mentored by a world class symphony orchestra during an intensive 10-day program, culminating in two highly anticipated performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 by the Whistler Institute Orchestra, led by the VSO’s internationally acclaimed Music Director, Maestro Bramwell Tovey.
Zodiac Music Academy & Festival
Located in the Côte D'Azur region of the South of France, the Zodiac Music Academy & Festival invites 45 highly gifted young artists between the ages of 17-35 to study, perform in the magical region. With chamber music at its heart, each participant performs in a number of ensembles and receives daily coaching, in addition to private instruction.
