As a former philosophy professor with over 12 years of experience working on emerging tech, Dr. Van Hollebeke is committed to confronting the socio-technical challenges that strain existing legal and societal norms and make people think through what they value most (and how to preserve and enhance those things!). He closed out a 10+ year career at Microsoft helping to ship multiple products incorporating OpenAI models.
Phi Beta Kappa Magee Address: Pursuing Racial Equity in Systems Addressing Homelessness
With Prof. Carolyn Weisz, Emerita Professor of Psychology. The Magee address was established in honor of John B. Magee, Professor of Philosophy and Religion. Prof. Magee was an ordained United Methodist minister and an outstanding professor, author, and mentor who was one of the driving forces in establishing a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Puget Sound in 1986.
Remembering the Fall of the Wall: 35th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Sponsored by the Department of German Studies, all campus community members are welcome to join this special presentation from Visiting Professor Kirsten Christensen who was in Berlin when the wall came down, has since been able to read her own Stasi file in the former Soviet-occupied zone, and will share her own pieces of a wall that was both a physical barrier and a cultural symbol. Refreshment served at 4 p.m., with talk and q&a to follow.

On September 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. Dr. Randall Horton will give a reading from his memoir Dead Weight as well as other works. He is here pursuant to the Mellon Humanities for All Times grant to support approaches to questions of the carceral state, prisons, and the criminal legal system.
