The University of Puget Sound has received a $1,050,000 gift from Richard N. Laurance ’74 to establish the Puget Sound Endowed Fund for the university’s crew program. The endowment will provide unrestricted support for the Loggers, helping sustain the school’s 60-plus-year tradition of competitive rowing.
Three University of Puget Sound students, Julio Deloya-Garcia ’27 of San Jose, California; Hayes Freeman ’26 of Crested Butte, Colorado; and Isabeau Fuller ’27 of St. Peter, Minnesota, have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships by the U.S. Department of State for study abroad trips through Spring 2026.

University of Puget Sound has named Chelsea Herman as its new athletics director, effective June 30, 2025. Herman brings more than 20 years of senior-level leadership experience in collegiate athletics, most recently serving as deputy athletics director and senior woman administrator at California State University, San Bernardino. She will succeed Amy Hackett, who retired in December 2024 after 21 years as the longest-serving athletics director in Logger history.
It’s summer in Tacoma and school may be out of session, but for the middle and high school students enrolled in the University of Puget Sound’s Summer Academic Challenge, it’s the perfect time to gain new skills and stave off summer learning loss. A group of students are gathered around computers, learning how to code by building a website from scratch.
Brendan Lanctot, professor of Hispanic studies at the University of Puget Sound, has been recognized by the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Nineteenth Century Section for his chapter, “Civic Festivals, Popular Spectacles, and the Art of Drawing Republics.” He earned an Honorable Mention from the organization, highlighting Lanctot’s innovative exploration of how 19th-century public spectacles shaped political identities in Latin America.
