Dear Campus Community,
I am pleased to announce that on Monday, November 2, Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown will deliver the Fall 2026 Susan Resneck Pierce Lecture in Public Affairs and the Arts. An Army veteran and former U.S. Attorney for Western Washington, Brown brings a deep perspective on constitutional rights, the rule of law, and the value of higher education. His career includes serving as general counsel to the governor, defending landmark public safety laws in complex civil litigation, and holding federal leadership roles in civil rights and public safety.
In his lecture, Brown will address the critical legal and societal questions facing higher education today. He will examine the balance between individual and institutional academic freedom, and the rights of educators and universities to pursue truth and manage curricula without censorship. He will also share personal reflections on how his education influenced his professional journey, which took him from Steilacoom to Morehouse College, Harvard Law School, and ultimately to the state’s highest legal office.
