Dear Campus Community Members,

Today, the jury in the trial of three Tacoma Police Department officers charged in the killing of Tacoma resident Manuel Ellis concluded their deliberations and delivered verdicts of not guilty on all counts.

The outcome of this trial touches on issues of justice, police brutality, and racism that galvanized our country in 2020 and persist to this day, and will undoubtedly evoke a diverse array of emotions for members of our campus community. It is vitally important that we seek support from one another and engage in civil discussion as a community as we collectively process these verdicts.

For members of our campus community in need of support, we encourage you to reach out to Chaplain Dave Wright or Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services (CHWS) (253.879.1555) beginning January 2, 2024. During the winter break, digital resources continue to be available for students via UWill, our student mental health and wellness online platform. Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) also provides counseling support for faculty and staff.

We know there is pain and hurt in the community, and will continue to provide care for our campus members and strive to be a valued partner for Tacoma in the collective work of antiracism and justice. Our hearts go out to the Ellis family and all those who knew and loved him.

Sincerely,

Isiaah Crawford, Ph.D. | President
