The Summer Fellowship Internship Program (SFI) supports students who would like to gain experience interning for nonprofit or public sector organizations. Through a competitive application process, students are selected to engage with local organizations in the Tacoma community and represent the University of Puget Sound in cultivated internship positions for 10 weeks during the summer. Successful applicants for the SFI program will join a learning cohort and meet weekly throughout the program to reflect on learning experiences.

Applications for the 2026 Summer Fellowship Internship Program will open on Wednesday, January 21 and close on Friday, February 27.

If you are interested in applying for the Summer Fellowship Internship Program, please plan on attending one of the required information sessions in the McCormick Room, Library 303 or Murray Board Room:

  • Tuesday, January 20 | 10 a.m. - McCormick Room
  • Wednesday, January 21 | Noon - McCormick Room
  • Thursday, January 22 | 1-2 p.m. - Murray Board Room
  • Tuesday, January 27 | 2 p.m. - Murray Board Room
  • Thursday, January 29 | Noon - McCormick Room

Key Features

  • Program Dates: Tuesday, May 26 - Friday, July 31
  • A $4,000 fellowship is awarded to Summer Fellowship Internship participants
  • Students attend a weekly, two-hour community meeting
  • Students engage in immersive internships 20-28 hours per week for 10 weeks
  • Students will have opportunities to connect with each other and Puget Sound Alumni
  • Low cost, on-campus housing available

Application Requirements

  • Participation in an informational session or meeting
  • 2.5 Minimum GPA
  • Must be returning to Puget Sound the following year
  • 5 essay questions
  • Application Deadline: Friday, February 27, 2026

Application Process

Applications are evaluated based on essay responses and financial need. 

  1. Attend an information session.
  2. You can begin researching past SFI past internships positions and identifying organizations that you may be interested in. Finalized positions for the 2026 program will be updated in early February.
  3. The application deadline is Friday, February 27, 2026. You will be notified by email if you are selected as one of the finalists.
  4. Set up an appointment with CES to review your application materials.
  5. Submit your final resumes and cover letters to Experiential Learning Programs and Support using a shared google drive that will be provided.
  6. Interview at internship sites March 23 - April 3. *Note: Internship sites will select the candidates they wish to interview. Applicants are not guaranteed an interview or internship.
  7. Community partners have been asked to make offers by Monday, April 6.
  8. Participants should accept or decline position within 2 days of receiving the offer.
  9. Email Nicole Kendrick at nkendrick@pugetsound.edu to confirm secured positions by Friday, April 10.

On-Campus Housing for Summer Fellowship Internship Participants

SFI participants are eligible to reside in campus housing while engaged in their summer internships. Information about housing for SFI participants is available on the Residence Life Summer Housing web page.

Please note, housing reservations will be made for students only after accepting a position with an SFI community partner and are contingent upon availability.
