The Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society was founded at Ohio State University in 1915. We are a national organization devoted to the promotion of research and academic excellence in the biological sciences. The Puget Sound chapter, Alpha Phi, was chartered in 1948 by noted Puget Sound biologists including James R. Slater and Gordon D. Alcorn. Phi Sigma members participate in activities such as volunteering, social events, tutoring, and an annual research symposium.

Will Thatcher Phi Sigma Secretary
Will Thatcher: Secretary

Hey y’all! I’m Will (he/him) and I’m majoring in Molecular & Cellular Biology with a minor in Environmental Policy & Decision Making. I grew up in Los Angeles, and decided on Puget Sound, because I wanted to explore the PNW. After undergrad, I’ll apply to medical school, as I’m hoping to be a surgeon someday. I love hanging out with my brothers in my fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, going to a Mariner’s game, working out, baking, and listening to music. On campus you can find me as an IA for Cell Biology in the fall and as the GHC for SAE, and when I’m not in classes, I’m probably studying in Opp café.

Ruby Gunter Phi Sigma Treasurer

Hello! My name is Ruby (she/her), and I am a senior majoring in biology and music! I am from Vancouver Washington and I will be your treasurer this year! During the school year you can find me playing violin with the orchestra, working as an IA for biology labs, being one of the biology subject tutors at the CWL, drinking matcha in Oppenheimer cafe, or hanging in the music lounge! If you see me around, please say hi!! I got to do research in the Woods lab this summer studying moss, and it was my favorite thing EVER! I love to spend my free time outside as much as possible, and am really interested in our local plants. I am so excited and honored to serve as your treasurer this year--I think we will be able to make great things happen!

My favorite things to do outside of lab work include playing guitar, exploring the outdoors, and watching horror movies. On campus, you can find me working at the Puget Sound Natural History Museum restoring specimens, or in the painting studio of Kittredge Hall. My favorite place to volunteer is at the Neighborhood Clinic, where I help people access medical care for free. I also work in the Experiential Learning office on campus helping people find internships and research positions. I spent this past summer working as a medical scribe in the emergency room and doing research on nanoparticles in the Tollefson lab. I am so excited to help others share their research projects in our annual Phi Sigma Research Symposium this spring!

I also dance in our dance club, play chess in our chess club, have a radio show with our school's radio station, and I eat pancakes at pancake club! Sofia Colvin Phi Sigma Pranks Chair
Sofia Colvin: Pranks Chair

Hey!! I’m Sofia (she/they) and I’m a junior. I’m dual-majoring in Biology and Environmental Arts and Humanities, with a minor in German. I grew up overseas so I’m from all over the place. I tell people I’m from Phoenix, AZ to keep it simple haha. I chose Puget Sound because my favorite game (The Last of Us: part II) takes place largely in Seattle. I’m not sure exactly what I’ll be doing after undergrad, but I want to chase my passion for environmental conservation and the preservation of wildlife. I like weight-lifting, shredding on bass (guitar), video games, dungeons and dragons, painting, thrifting and a lot of other nerdy stuff. I also love pranks, hijinks, mischief, escapades and the like. Needless to say, I’m very excited for this upcoming year! Keep an eye out for anything strange or unusual. I might be the cause!

Ishaan Gollamudi Phi Sigma Brewmaster
Ishaan Gollamudi: Brewmaster

Hi! My name is Ishaan (he/they), and I’m a senior from the Bay Area. I’m a Molecular and Cellular Biology major and Bioethics minor, and I’ll be serving as your Brewmaster for the semester. After that, I hope to pursue an MD-PhD, but for now I’ve been working on my thesis in the Thines Lab. When I’m not hunched over a lab bench, I’m usually workshopping sketch ideas with the Ubiquitous They Sketch Comedy Team, or pitching articles for the Combat Zone — the satire section of The Trail! Off-campus, I volunteer at the Neighborhood Clinic, a free urgent care clinic for uninsured and underinsured people, and I work as an emergency room scribe. My highest priority as Brewmaster is ensuring that my concoctions don’t send you to either, and second highest priority is to keep everyone hydrated. Hopefully, we’ll revive a long-standing Phi Sigma tradition along the way!
