I chose Puget Sound because it allows me to continue a strong liberal arts education I began in high school. I was also drawn to Puget Sound because I was recruited by the crew team, which gives me the opportunity to grow academically and be involved outside of the classroom. I value balancing academic and extracurricular, and Puget Sound offers the community and support to do both successfully.
My favorite class so far was Politics and Government 102 Introduction to Comparative Politics. I particularly enjoy the small class size where I can engage in discussion and hear various opinions from different backgrounds. I also enjoyed building close relationships with the professor, who shared a similar background with me, and would regularly go to professor’s office hours to engage in discussion.
As a first-generation college student, I was really worried about navigating in college before I arrived. I wasn’t sure what to expect or how to find support, but I have found the faculty in Puget Sound very supportive and approachable and they help me with genuine care. This makes me feel supported despite studying far from home.
I have participated in EXLN 295 SERVE Puget Sound Living-Learning community, where other students that are interested in helping the community live on the same floor. We volunteer with different organizations and meet weekly in class to share our experiences. This program has really helped me connect and develop close ties with people on the same floor and help me better understand the Tacoma community, especially coming from a different background.
I have found my campus life to be very enjoyable. Everyone here is very welcoming and I have made some of my best friends in Puget Sound. Despite English not being my first language and coming from a different background, I have felt supported and included. The campus is also very beautiful and surrounded by nature, which makes me feel motivated everyday.
Students in the Department of Politics and Government (P&G) study the struggle over power, authority, freedom, justice, war, and peace at the local, state, national, and international levels.
