The Swope Endowed Lectures are pleased to welcome Ann Holmes Redding back to Puget Sound for an evening of reflection on her ongoing scholarly and personal work on the ways the figure of Jesus is used to create and sustain a "cultural Christianity" that is often at odds with the ways Jesus is understood in scriptural and historic contexts. This contrast opens space for spiritual and social movements to engage with Jesus in critique of cultural Christianity and in support of liberation and justice.

Dehumanization, the attitude of conceiving of others as less than human, is intimately tied to race. Groups of people who are dehumanized are often first racialized. They are treated as members of an alien and inferior race. To understand why this is, we need to understand both how race works and how dehumanization works. In this talk, I will use examples of anti-Black and anti-Semitic violence to illustrate and explain the interface between racism and dehumanization.

"Every Step Counts: Understanding and Facilitating Locomotor Skills in Children with Down Syndrome" presented by Julia Looper. Children with Down syndrome often experience delayed walking, impacting their overall development. Pediatric physical therapists are looking for more effective ways to help infants with Down syndrome learn to walk. This talk highlights the importance of early walking for these children and introduces an emerging method that encourages play and movement while standing.

The Symposium is an inter-generational dialogue and calls to action from community elders to present and future generations of social justice leaders. This year's call is for young and old people of African descent to begin "getting the bag" by making active efforts to build long-term financial health and wealth for themselves and their children.
