MUS 256 | Collaborative Piano Skills II - Vocal

This course will explore the techniques and different practices pianists need in order to collaborate with singers, in a solo or choral capacity. This course is required for Piano Performance majors in their junior year who have successfully completed MUS 255. The course is encouraged for other piano students interested in developing their collaboration skills, as long as the same prerequisite is met.

MUS 251 | Songwriting 1

This course provides students with instruction in writing, arranging, performing, and recording original songs. Students will learn about songwriting through analyzing the form, texture, and motivic structures of popular songs. Students will write multiple songs during the semester, record them, and perform them on concert showcases.

MUS 248 | Jazz Pedagogy

This class centers the study and practice of the fundamentals of jazz for the purpose of jazz instruction in K-12 classrooms. This course includes a lab portion in which students will practice jazz performance skills on their main and secondary instruments, study form and score analysis, arrange beginning level jazz tunes, observe public school jazz classes, and read and discuss issues in jazz education related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the jazz classroom.

MUS 246 | Vocal Techniques

This course provides the basics of vocal technique, diction and pedagogy for the music educator. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic vocal skills and pedagogical concepts leading to a better understanding of the voice. Specific problems often encountered by choral directors are also discussed.
