Dear Puget Sound Staff and Faculty Members,

You will recall that the Budget Task Force recommended a 1% increase in the salary pool, which I promised to consider once fall 2021 enrollment was known and revenue projections could be updated and analyzed for budget impact.

This has been completed, and in recognition of the mission-critical work performed by our staff and faculty, I am pleased to report that the executive committee of the board of trustees has approved compensation increases for this year, which include the following.

Effective with the first payroll in November:

Staff salaries

  • Across-the-board increase. Staff employed prior to Oct. 1, 2021, will receive a 2% increase.
  • Minimum pay rate. To address market conditions and support our lowest paid staff, the minimum rate of pay will increase to $15 for any staff member not reaching $15 per hour after application of the 2% increase.
  • Wage compression. To address the wage compression this will create among staff earning between $14.70 and $17.00 per hour before the 2% increase, an additional 2% increase will be provided for a total of 4%. This will impact 45 positions, primarily in dining and facilities.

Faculty salaries

  • Provost Behling will consult with the Faculty Salary Committee regarding the distribution of the 2% faculty salary pool increase (less the funds already disbursed in promotions).  Salary increases will be effective Nov. 1.

Faculty and staff continue to work very hard and in new ways under challenging circumstances, particularly since the onset of the pandemic, demonstrating commitment to Puget Sound, our mission and our students. While the total rewards review that we have discussed has been deferred until we have new leadership in Human Resources and complete the comprehensive program review, we hope that these changes to FY22 compensation will help support you and recognize your significant achievements.

I’d also like to recognize our colleagues in Human Resources for their invaluable assistance in collaborating on this compensation plan, and our colleagues in Finance and Administration for their good and thoughtful work that has enabled us to advance compensation this year.

With appreciation,

Isiaah
