Maria Sampen  Maria Sampen, violin, enjoys a vibrant musical career as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher. Equally at home with repertoire ranging from classical to avant-garde to popular styles, Sampen delights audiences with her eclectic programs, her passionate performance style and her highly expressive playing. She performs extensively in Europe, Asia, Canada and all over the United States. As a soloist and chamber musician, Sampen has performed in prominent venues including Carnegie Hall Weill Recital Hall, Symphony Space (NY), Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Town Hall (Seattle), the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Detroit Institute of Art. Performing highlights abroad include the Sichuan Conservatory in Chengdu, China; the Akademie of Art in Szczecin, Poland; and concert venues in the Canary Islands, Spain; St. Andrews, Scotland; and Singapore.  In addition to her busy concert schedule, Sampen is a dedicated teacher. She is Professor of Violin at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. Sampen graduated with highest honors from the University of Michigan (Bachelor of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts) and Rice University (Masters of Music). Full bio.         James Doyle James W. Doyle is a percussionist, teaching artist, multidisciplinary collaborator, and arts administrator based in the Pacific Northwest. He performs as a chamber musician, soloist, improviser, and orchestral percussionist throughout the United States and Japan, and is an ardent observer of moving water. This latter detail can be understood through his ongoing series of single-shot videos/compositions titled Confluence. As a chamber musician, Doyle is a member of Striking Music, a Seattle-based percussion and media collective exploring light, sound, and design, and the Doyle-Kane flute and percussion duo with Tracy Kane Doyle. He tours and records with Apricity Trio, a U.S./Japan-based percussion, clarinet, and flute trio collaborating with sculptor Koshi Hayashi and composer Ippo Tsuboi, and recently performed at the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival with violinist Maria Sampen, and the Chicago-based collaborative music ensemble, Beyond This Point. Early in his career, Doyle toured the United States as the principal percussionist of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West, and toured throughout the Middle East, Southwest Asia, and Africa on deployment as a drum set player with the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest’s rock band. He’s a Marimba One, Vic Firth, Beetle Percussion, and Black Swamp endorser, artist, and educator, and earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  About the Series The Jacobsen Series was established in 1984 in honor of Leonard Jacobsen, former chair and professor of Puget Sound’s piano department. Ticket sales support the Jacobsen Series Scholarship Fund, annual music scholarships awarded to outstanding student performers and scholars in the School of Music.
