The Center for Writing & Learning (CWL) is in the heart of the University of Puget Sound campus, and supports student learning through one-on-one tutoring appointments, small group review sessions, workshops, and more. Additionally, we offer faculty development support through faculty pedagogy workshops and individual consultations. The CWL is staffed by about 35 undergraduate peer tutors, 2 faculty members, 2 faculty directors, and an assistant director.
In the CWL, writing and speaking advisors offer peer tutoring in writing across the curriculum and presentation practice, and faculty consultants provide assistance to students and Puget Sound alums writing applications for graduate school, and post-graduate fellowships and scholarships. Subject tutors provide support for students studying in over 12 disciplines. In addition, Academic Consultants and Co-Readers offer peer-assistance to students working to improve their time management, studying and reading skills.
Students from our center regularly present at the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing and the European Writing Centers Association conference. Puget Sound hosted the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing in 2016.
Our writing center was founded in 1984, making it one of the oldest writing centers in the world. Our center was featured in the landmark 1993 Writing Centers in Context, and directors and tutors from our center have been active for many years in national and international writing and learning center professional organizations. We were the first university in the United States to participate in the international Long Night Against Procrastination, an event we have held every year since 2012. Our composition and name has changed several times over the years; most recently the CWL absorbed the University of Puget Sound’s Center for Speech and Advocacy. Throughout our entire history, however, we have been committed to supporting peer-to-peer learning at Puget Sound.
