Alternative Break ("Alt. Break") programs take place over spring break each year and provide students an opportunity to engage in an immersive service-learning experience. University of Puget Sound currently offers two programs: engaging locally with Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity and partnering with Long Way Home in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala.

Students participating in Alternative Break programs can earn up to .25 units of EXLN 295, Community-Based Learning Experience credit for each experience. This course meets the Experiential Learning Core Requirement. This course integrates meaningful community engagement with reflection and shared learning. Students who are a part of the CBL Experience will have the opportunity to explore their strengths and values through the context of engagement in the community and will explore topics related to service and professional development. Course requirements vary by program.

A building in Guatemala
Long Way Home (Guatemala)

Long Way Home operates in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. Their mission is to mobilize people to actively participate in democracy and create innovative pathways to economic and environmental justice through green building, employment, and education.

Student volunteers will stay at the “Volunteer House,” an eco-friendly home designed using green construction techniques and will learn about Long Way Home’s work through participation in green building projects that meet the needs of the local community.

Applications are accepted through the International Programs office from September through mid-October of each year.

Habitat For Humanity (Tacoma)

Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity has been creating affordable housing opportunities in our community for over 40 years.

Student volunteers stay on or near campus and work on various job sites from Monday-Friday of spring break, which may include demolition, renovation or new construction.

Applications are accepted from September through mid-February of each year.
