Fans at this weekend’s Homecoming football game witnessed a piece of Puget Sound history unfold. Twenty years after the original mascot’s debut, the university unveiled a new look for Grizz, the Loggers’ No. 1 fan.

This is the same Grizz, but everyone’s favorite bear spent the summer secretly undergoing a makeover. Grizz spent time in the Logger Store choosing the perfect outfit, a sensible and rugged flannel shirt and denim jeans in a nod to the university’s Logger past and a handmade, vintage-inspired beanie that harkens back to the hats worn by first-year students up until the late 1960s. Grizz was also spotted at Collins Memorial Library and the Athletics and Aquatics Center to bulk up in both mind and body. Of course, Grizz still carries the trademark axe to lead cheers of “hack hack, chop chop!” at Logger Athletics events.

“We’ve all been wondering where Grizz has been and now we finally have our answer,” said Victor Martin, vice president for university relations. “We’re thrilled to share this new iteration of Grizz with the wider Logger community.”

Grizz’s origins stretch back to the early 1900s, when Puget Sound’s sports teams were briefly called the Grizzlies before adopting the Loggers moniker. For years, the university’s mascot was a logger, but the tradition faded over time. In the early 2000s, members of the Associated Students of the University of Puget Sound (ASUPS) began to work on a new mascot to spread the Logger spirit, including ASUPS President Alex Israel ’06 and Vice President Ryan McAninch ’06. Grizz officially debuted at halftime during the Homecoming football game on Oct. 1, 2005, and was well-received by students and alumni, according to The Trail.

“Grizz is so much more than a mascot. Grizz plays a pivotal role as an icon, ambassador and emotional connection to our Puget Sound spirit and values,” said Chelsea Herman, director of athletics. “We look to Grizz to unite, inspire, engage, and provide a shared identity for our students, staff, faculty, and alumni.”

Grizz’s new look celebrates the mascot’s 20-year history at Puget Sound and honors the 115th anniversary of the founding of ASUPS. It also aligns the mascot with the Grizz artwork seen across campus designed by Art Director Kris Nyström. Fans of the loveable grizzly can find plenty of Grizz gear at the Logger store, including hats, t-shirts, mugs, and more.

When asked about the new look, Grizz, as usual, had no comment, but did offer a high-five. Grizz is eager to get back to work, attending games and events all over campus and spreading Logger spirit far and wide.
