The Puget Sound neuroscience program will provide some links and materials in relation to potential internship opportunities. Students are encouraged to apply and also seek out other opportunities as they come by. Please inform your advisor or the Neuroscience committee of your interests.
The following internships and research opportunities have been updated for the Spring 2023 semester.
Johnson & Johnson Research & Development Internship
Johnson & Johnson is currently hiring undergraduate and graduate students for their Research and Development internship. The R&D internship encompasses the development of advanced materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise. We offer a fast-paced cross-functional, technologically advanced, corporate environment, passionate about developing individual engineering and scientific skills. You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.
This is a paid internship, with pay-rates ranging from $20/hr to $22/hr, depending on your class standing. The typical summer internship term runs from May - August, with opportunities to continue in your role after the end of the internship.

NIBR Neuroscience Gene Therapy - Histology Summer 2023 Internship
Location: Novartis in San Diego, California
The Neuroscience Disease Area at Novartis is looking for an intern to gain knowledge of histologic techniques and assay development to perform tissue-based analysis in support of discovery and validation of disease relevant targets and pathways at the San Diego campus primarily focusing on gene therapies.
- Orientation in sample receipt, logging, and dissection of rodent samples
- Introduction to standard histology procedures including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining and image capture of fresh, frozen, and paraffin-embedded tissues
- Training given in more sophisticated techniques such as immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization
- Demonstration of image analysis and processing using Indica Lab HALO software
- Generate quantitative data using Prism Graph Pad
- Record all experiments in electronic laboratory notebook
- Other related duties as assigned (making orders for reagents, perform samples inventory)
In order to be considered, applicants must have completed at least two years of college education, have at least a 3.0 GPA, have computer literacy in Word, Excel, Graph Pad Prism, and Powerpoint. Applicants must also be enrolled in school during the semester following the summer internship.

Interdisciplinary Research Intern - Fall 2023
Location: Seattle Anxiety Specialists in Seattle, Washington
This is a writing intensive internship that exists to improve public access to and understanding of clinical research, theory, and practice in Psychiartry and clinical psychology. The internship accomplishes this goal by publishing long-form journalistic research produced by its interns, under the supervision and mentorship of experienced researchers. The bulk of this internship is in science and healthcare journalism. You will work under the guidance of a mentor or supervisor to conduct interviews with both clinical researchers and behavioral healthcare providers, write summaries of research papers, and work towards writing an encyclopedia entry on a topic you choose in collaboration with your supervisor.
This position is remote, with interns being expected to work at least 10 hours per week. This is an unpaid internship. There is no application due date; applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
- Interest in becoming non-fiction writers, science or healthcare journalists, psychiatrists, psychologists, or psychotherapists
- Experience or coursework in Journalism/English and Psychology/Neuroscience recommended
- Undergraduate or graduate student

Research Assistant at Yale School of Medicine - Neuroscience
Location: Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut
The laboratory of Dr. Jaime Grutzendler in the Yale Departments of Neurology and Neuroscience (https://medicine.yale.edu/lab/grutzendler/) is looking for a highly motivated individual with a recent bachelor’s degree who is excited about joining a multidisciplinary research group to investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain function and disease. The laboratory utilizes a variety of techniques including state-of-the art intravital microscopy in mice, spatial transcriptomics, and proteomics and induced pluripotent stem cells to study mechanisms of neuropathology. We also have several translational initiatives to develop therapies for neurodegenerative disorders. The postbac will be an active member in several exciting projects and interact closely with students and postdocs. The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree at the time employment begins. Successful candidates often use this experience as a springboard to gain more experience and publications as they prepare for graduate or medical school.
Duration and compensation: Up to two years, with an estimated pay of $30,000 - $40,000 a year
- BS is required, preferably with a major in biological sciences, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering
- Research experience using molecular biology, cell culture, and imaging methodologies
