Description

The Japan Foundation with support from the Miki Memorial Trust provides funds for the purpose of supporting faculty-initiated, short-term study abroad in Japan with 3-4 Puget Sound students. This grant is available once every three years beginning in 2014-2015. Costs covered by these funds may include airfare, per diem and local travel expenses for a faculty member, as well as airfare, lodging, and domestic travel for students, and other relevant costs associated with the proposed study abroad program. Students shall be responsible for their own meals and incidentals. Up to $25,000 may be granted for each cycle of the program.

Recipients of a Miki Faculty-Student Short-Term Study Abroad Grant will be required to register their travel at least four weeks prior to departure. Information on how to register travel and request approval for travel to high-risk areas is available on the University’s Travel Advisory site. Miki grant funds will not be released until the travel is registered.

Eligibility

Miki funds are intended for the use of the following: tenure-line faculty; faculty holding ongoing, full-time clinical assistant, associate, or full professor positions; faculty holding full-time three-year assistant professor appointments; visiting assistant professors (VAPs); and ongoing, full-time artists-in-residence. Adjuncts, and other non-tenure-line, short term replacements of tenure-line faculty will not be funded. Preference will be given to faculty affiliated with the Asian Studies Program.

Application

Application for these funds should be made to the Faculty Support Committee through the online form. The application should include:

  1. Project proposal (1,500 words maximum).

    a. Description of the proposed short-term study program, including destination(s), duration, and activities.
    b. Anticipated benefit of the program to the students.
    c. Description of how the proposed short-term study will enhance the applicant’s teaching and professional development.

  2. An itemized budget, including brief explanations for expenses.
  3. For programs that involve the use of human participants or animals, please be aware that appropriate approval must be obtained before grant funds will be released. Please consult IRB or IACUC approval processes information on the university’s website for details.

Deadline

Application for the Miki Faculty-Student Short-Term Study Abroad Grant should be submitted by December 1 for travel the following summer or the following December-January. 

Reporting

Faculty members receiving a Miki Faculty-Student Short-Term Study Abroad Grant shall submit a written report of the activities undertaken, by August 31 of the year the grant is awarded. The report should include the following: (1) a detailed description of how the goals and objectives outlined in the original proposal were achieved, and (2) a description of the benefits of the experience in relation to teaching and professional development. The report should be submitted to enrichment@pugetsound.edu.

Special Conditions

Recipients of a Miki Faculty-Student Short-Term Study Abroad grant agree to return to the university for a period of at least one year after the conclusion of the summer trip, or to repay the university all funds received as a part of the grant.
