Epitomized in media like Crazy Rich Asians, boba liberalism diverges from the radical roots of the 1960’s and 1970’s Asian American Movement. Asian American cuisine has largely remained the domain of “boba liberals.” This talk contrasts the career of one such “boba liberal” restauranteur, Cecilia Chiang (1920-2020), with those of her workers. Chiang operated San Francisco’s first fine-dining Chinese restaurant, The Mandarin.

This quirky project was conceived with a dual purpose: supporting your student, while investing proceeds into the Women's League Scholarship Endowment.

Dr. Adam Goodman (History, University of Illinois Chicago) will be presenting on his book, The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Expelling Immigrants. Published by Princeton University Press, Goodman’s text is an analysis of the mechanisms, bureaucracies, and historical figures that have led to well over 50 million deportations dating back to the late nineteenth century.

LORI MATSUKAWA is known to most households in the greater Northwest as a longtime journalist and anchor of Seattle's NBC affiliate, KING 5. She also has a new book Being There: A Memoir of an Asian American Journalist, and she'll talk about those experiences, moderated by KNKX/NPR's Lisa Brooks. Presened by ASUPS Student Programs/Lectures
