Presentation Topic: Courts in the Crossfire: Global Lessons on Justice and Judicial Independence
How do courts maintain their independence while addressing politically charged issues with the potential to reshape society? This talk explores how courts in Mexico, Colombia, and South Africa navigated these challenges following periods of conflict. It examines how judges decide which cases to take on and how they rule, balancing justice, politics, and public trust. By studying these countries’ efforts to seek accountability and reconciliation, Prof. Kendall highlights the crucial role courts play in protecting human rights and supporting democratic systems. It also considers how these lessons might apply to courts in other countries, including international courts and those in the U.S. Attendees will reflect on the global pressures facing judicial independence and the future of justice in a less democratic world.
Appetizers and refreshments are included.
Reception begins at 5:30 p.m.
Presentation starts at 6 p.m.
Please submit your RSVP by Tuesday, Jan. 28.
We hope to see you there!
