Jacobsen Series: Celebrating Leroy Ostransky Day 50th Anniversary
Curated by Professor Gwynne Brown '95
Join us as we celebrate Puget Sound composers on the 50th Anniversary of Leroy Ostransky Day in Tacoma! Ostransky '48 (1918–1993) graduated from Puget Sound with honors in 1948 and returned as a faculty member in 1952 after earning his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. In 1975, People magazine named him one of the nation's 12 outstanding teachers.
On Oct. 23, 1975, Ostransky's Symphony No. 4 "American" was performed by the Seattle Symphony with the Puget Sound Adelphian Concert Choir and the Pacific Lutheran University Concert Choir. The date was recognized as "Leroy Ostransky Day" by Tacoma Mayor Gordon Johnston and the City Council. We are delighted to honor the legacy of this inspiring alum and faculty member, while also recognizing past and present Puget Sound composers.
The program will feature original music by Puget Sound alumni and current students including Scott Ordway '06, Forrest Pierce '94, Brianna Babin '27, Katy Hassing '23, and Greg Simon '07; joined by members of the Adelphian Concert Choir; Kim Davenport, piano; Dawn Padula, mezzo-soprano; Joyce Ramee, viola; Maria Sampen, violin; Robert Hutchinson, bass; and more.
