Henryk Szadziewski Lecture: Genocide Tours? The Ethics of Travel to Xinjiang and Other ‘No Rights’ Spaces
Henryk Szadziewski is Director of Research at the Uyghur Human Rights Project. He also holds a Ph.D. from University of Hawai’i.
The situation of the Uyghur people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China has been called a genocide by two U.S. administrations. However, international tour companies, hotel chains, and tourists continue to operate and visit the region. What is the role, if any, of international travelers and businesses in Xinjiang? This talk presents new research on the travel industry in Xinjiang to examine the ethics and responsibilities of travel to ’no rights’ spaces, asking if we have a role as agents of change.
This event is part of the Human Rights in Asia Series sponsored by The Mellon Humanities for All Times and Crime, Law & Justice Studies.
