The threat of an asteroid strike destroying the world was well-established by equations and observations but consistently failed to gain traction in the government. this was due largely to scientists struggling with the context of the late, resurgent cold war: an intensely apocalyptic time that constrained how one could turn a scientific prediction into a political cause."
