Dr. Adam Goodman (History, University of Illinois Chicago) will be presenting on his book, The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Expelling Immigrants. Published by Princeton University Press, Goodman’s text is an analysis of the mechanisms, bureaucracies, and historical figures that have led to well over 50 million deportations dating back to the late nineteenth century. Moreover, the book is also a history of anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States, connecting “how federal, state, and local officials have targeted various groups for expulsion, from Chinese and Europeans at the turn of the twentieth century to Central Americans and Muslims today.” This talk will be followed by a Q&A session.
