Associate Professor, Biology
Prof. Sosa teaches core classes in the biology program majors including the introductory course Unity of Life (BIOL 111) and Genetics (BIOL 213), where students develop a foundation in life sciences, laboratory research, and scientific writing, and explore applications of genetic technologies. Sosa also teaches an upper division Applied Bioinformatics course (BIOL 365) where students learn how modern genome-based approaches and programming can address diverse problems in life sciences and broader interdisciplinary questions. This semester Sosa is teaching the Microbiology course (BIOL 350) where students merge concepts of genetic diversity, metabolism, and ecology to read and learn about how and why we study microorganisms, how we harness their biochemical properties, what their adaptations and functions are in the environment, and how they interact with each other. Sosa's research focuses on microbial adaptations that mediate the biogeochemical cycle of carbon and organic matter.
