Data Governance Committee

Welcome!

The Data Governance Committee (DGC) is here to provide the necessary structure, strategy, and support needed to ensure that all campus data have integrity, are collaboratively managed, and can be relied upon as a critical University asset. We seek to serve the campus community by democratizing data knowledge while balancing this with respect for individual privacy and data security.

A Brief History of the DGC

The Data Governance Committee was officially instituted in Spring 2022 with support from cabinet and builds on prior data governance efforts. The DGC's direct predecessor, the Data Standards Committee, operated from 2011 to 2022. The formation of this group was primarily motivated by the need to define and convert data from our legacy institutional data systems and to foster collaboration across departments in the management and use of data.  As our campus data infrastructure became increasingly complex, members of the Data Standards Committee saw a need to broaden the mission and set new directions.

DGC Charter and Data Governance Definitions

The DGC Charter is a document that outlines our mission and operations. It is approved by the President's Cabinet and provides general guidance for what we do. View the most recent DGC Charter.

Data Governance Terms and Definitions is a document created by the DGC to help us use shared language around data governance efforts. View the Terms and Definitions.

Current Projects

  • Gender Identity & Pronouns: DGC members have been working on a campus-wide project to support more inclusive gender identity, names, and pronouns within our software platforms. The first wave of upgrades launched in August 2022. See their project information page for more details and FAQs.
DGC Membership

The DGC seeks wide representation from across campus, especially focusing on offices that house data owners and data stewards. This includes: Academic Advising, Academic Dean, Admission, Business Services, Career and Employment Services, Finance, Human Resources, Institutional Research, International Programs, Library, Registrar, Student Affairs, Student Financial Services, Technology Services, University Counsel, and University Relations.

The Data Governance Committee is currently chaired by Francisco Chavez, Chief Information Officer, and is organized into four standing subcommittees:

  • Academic/Faculty - chaired by Gareth Barkin (Associate Dean's Office)
  • Data Definitions - chaired by Martha Wilson (Office of Admission)
  • Data Ownership - chaired by Faithlina Abeshima (Technology Services)
  • Regulatory Compliance - chaired by Michael Pastore (Registrar)

Please see the tabs below for the current composition of the full DGC and each subcommittee.
