This course prepares K-12 music candidates in the Master of Arts in Teaching program for teaching in music classrooms. One section of the course focuses on elementary music instruction and another section focuses on secondary music instruction. In the elementary section, students develop curricular knowledge and a reflective stance toward teaching elementary music. Students plan, teach, assess and think reflectively about curriculum while focusing on understanding the various ways in which children engage with music. In the secondary section, students are supported in the on-going process of developing and refining his/her/their music education teaching philosophy. Students consider the role that instrumental/choral music teachers play within the broader school community and within the scope and sequence of K-12 education. Students will reflect on personal experiences in music education and how our experiences, beliefs, and assumptions shape how music is taught/learned in public schools. In addition, students in this course build leadership skills by participating in a graduate assistantship with one of the active music groups on campus.
