This interdisciplinary course explores the complex relationships between race, health, and genetics through the lens of social, biological, and psychological sciences. We will examine how racism affects health outcomes, how stress is biologically embedded through epigenetics, and how historical and social trauma impacts generations. Using insights from neuroscience, public health, sociology, and critical race studies, students will engage with primary research, theoretical frameworks, and real-world case studies to understand how structural inequalities, in this case defined by race, shape biology and health disparities.
In addition to our thematic explorations, this course will introduce students to the liberal arts experience, campus resources, and strategies for academic success.
