Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
With hot temperatures and the potential for wildfire smoke affecting our region this week, I wanted to share a few reminders to help you take care of yourself and those around you.
During periods of extreme heat:
- Wear light-colored, light-weight, loose-fitting clothes, which may mean dressing more casually than we might otherwise;
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated; and
- Reduce temperatures in our work locations by keeping curtains and blinds closed, turning off overhead lights when possible, turning off heat-producing equipment not in use, using fans to keep spaces cool, etc.
If wildfire smoke affects our area:
- Monitor local air quality conditions before spending extended time outdoors.
- Keep windows and doors closed if smoke is present.
- Reduce strenuous outdoor activity when air quality is poor, especially if you have a respiratory health condition.
Conditions can change quickly, so we encourage everyone to stay informed through trusted local resources:
- Washington State Department of Health: Smoke from Fires
- Puget Sound Clean Air Agency: Current Air Quality
- National Weather Service – Seattle/Tacoma Forecasts and Heat Information
Staff members who have concerns about how heat or air quality may affect their work responsibilities should speak with their supervisor. Faculty with similar concerns are encouraged to work with their department chair or the provost, as appropriate. Human Resources team members are here to consult if you have questions or concerns; call us at extension 3369 or send an email to hr@pugetsound.edu for assistance.
Thank you for all you do to support our students and one another. We hope you have a comfortable and healthy week.
Best,
Nancy Nieraeth | Chief People Officer
