Dear Campus Community,

We are reaching out to let you know that Puget Sound is among the many institutions that are reportedly experiencing widespread issues with Canvas, our learning management system. This is believed to be part of a nationwide data breach impacting at least 9,000 institutions. As we shared previously, Canvas is down as of this afternoon, and we have not received an estimate of when access will be restored.

Additionally, Instructure, Canvas’s parent company, has notified us that some information for Puget Sound’s users may have been impacted by the breach. At this time, we have been informed that some user names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages between users may have been compromised. Technology Services is diligently working with Instructure and others to confirm the full scope of the breach impacting Puget Sound.

Note that this incident will not affect any of our Commencement celebrations this weekend.

Faculty using Canvas to collect final coursework and administer final exams should connect with their students to find the best way to proceed given the current outage. The Provost’s Office is available via email at provost@pugetsound.edu to assist faculty navigating these and other challenges resulting from the Canvas outage, including those teaching classes in the first Summer Session. Faculty with any concerns related to their ability to submit final grades as a result of this outage should contact the Registrar at registrar@pugetsound.edu.

We understand the timing of this disruption has a significant impact on certain members of our community and appreciate your patience as we work toward a resolution. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Francisco Chavez, MBA | Chief Information Officer
Andrew Kerkhoff, Ph.D. | Provost
