Dear University of Puget Sound community,

Many of us have been watching the news with deep concern as the conflict between Israel and Hamas has escalated into war. People around the world, including members of our community, are experiencing deep grief as a result of the horrific violence and heartbreaking loss of life taking place in Israel and Gaza. This war, undoubtedly, will claim many innocent victims on all sides.

Events such as this involve immense pain and fear and can impact communities like ours, even though we seem far removed from the conflict. The University of Puget Sound deeply values the diversity of its members, intentionally seeks equity, and actively works towards inclusion. Historically, when the conflict between Israel and Gaza escalates, the world sees an increase in antisemitic and Islamophobic speech and acts. But by coming together and seeking understanding despite our differences, we can build a stronger community. Members of our community may be feeling extremely vulnerable because of the war going on in Israel and Gaza. They may be fearful of openly sharing their perspective on what is undoubtedly a heartbreaking and complicated issue. Regardless of an individual’s perspective, it is important that we remain respectful, caring, and sensitive to the sorrow and frustration that they may be experiencing. Harassment and discrimination based on a person’s national or religious identity have no place at Puget Sound. The glorification of violence against civilians is never acceptable. It is important to be mindful of the impact our expressions and viewpoints have on others.

The VP for Student Affairs and the VP for Institutional Equity & Diversity have been reaching out to student groups who may be feeling vulnerable as a result of this conflict to offer support. For those seeking support, you can reach out to our Chaplain Dave Wright, or CHWS at 253.879.1555 / chws@pugetsound.edu. Our employee assistance program also provides counseling support for faculty and staff and can be reached at EAP

If you are looking for an opportunity to better understand the conflict, you are invited to attend a lunch and learn scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Wyatt Room 301. Professors Patrick O’Neil and Seth Weinberger will lead a discussion on the conflict.

We hope the violence and tragic loss of life will subside and that a peaceful resolution can be reached swiftly. While that takes place, let’s continue to build a caring, respectful, and inclusive community.

Sincerely,

Lorna Hernandez Jarvis | Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity
Sarah Comstock I Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
