Dear campus community,

I am pleased to announce that Wendy Cabrera Rubio has been selected for the inaugural International Artist-in-Residence Program in Spring 2024. The program is sponsored by an innovative collaboration between the Latina/o Studies Program and the Department of Art & Art History. Additionally, generous co-sponsorship from the Catherine Gould Chism Fund for the Humanities and funding from the Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity, the Latin American Studies and Science, Technology, Health & Society programs, and the Hispanic Studies Department has made this truly cross-disciplinary residency possible. Her residency, running from Feb. 12 to March 10, 2024, promises to be an enriching experience for our campus.

Cabrera Rubio's innovative textile and performance art explores critical themes, challenging boundaries and prompting reflection on mass culture, social issues, and historical narratives.

Cabrera Rubio holds an undergraduate degree from the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City, Mexico. She has an impressive list of exhibitions, including current shows in Mexico and the United States, and previous shows ranging from Ecuador to Belgium, showcasing her interdisciplinary collaborations and thought-provoking narratives.

Highlights of Cabrera Rubio's residency include:

  • Spring Exhibition at Kittredge Gallery: Opening March 6, this showcase will offer a unique opportunity to witness her thought-provoking artwork firsthand.
  • Creative Collaboration: She will engage directly with students and faculty through open studio days and workshops, providing valuable insights into her artistic process and inspiring the next generation of artists.
  • Community Engagement: Cabrera Rubio will extend her reach beyond the university, collaborating with the Tacoma Art Museum and the Puget Sound Natural History Museum and participating in public workshops and events.

We are honored to welcome Wendy Cabrera Rubio to campus, and I invite you to participate in the diverse offerings she brings to the university. Let's embrace this opportunity to foster creativity, dialogue, and community engagement!

Thank you,
