Dear Puget Sound Faculty and Staff,

The Tacoma forecast for today includes a daytime high temperature of 92 degrees. Thankfully, we aren’t expecting a sustained heatwave, and temperatures will cool down again this evening (http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/l/USWA0441). As we continue into summer, this is a good time for a reminder about ways to “beat the heat”:

  • Wear light-colored, light-weight, loose-fitting clothes, which may mean dressing more casually than we might otherwise.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Use practices that are likely to reduce temperatures in our work locations, e.g. keep curtains and blinds closed, turn off overhead lights when possible, turn off heat-producing equipment not in use, use fans to keep spaces cool, etc.
  • As applicable, remind guests in advance of arrival that most campus facilities are not air-conditioned.
  • When approved by department heads, consider the feasibility of temporary adjustments to work schedules and locations.
  • Pay attention to your individual health condition and advise your supervisor of any special needs you may have due to the heat.
  • Starting today through August 5, cool off with free popsicles in Marshall Hall for regular staff, student staff, and faculty members between noon and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, courtesy of Dining and Event Services!
