Thanks to the financial commitments of alumni and friends, graduate students can alleviate the financial burden of continuing their educational journey.

Through departmental scholarships, fellowship opportunities, and educational borrowing graduate students at the University of Puget Sound can explore a number of options to afford the cost of attendance.

Graduate Scholarships

Puget Sound's named scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to students who meet the specific selection criteria established by the donors. Scholarships recipients are chosen by department faculty; a separate application is not required for consideration. All university scholarships require full time enrollment and that you are paying full time tuition for the program that you are enrolled in.

New students applying to start in the MPH program for the fall semester of 2026 will be automatically evaluated for an academic scholarship of up to $20,000 in total institutional aid as part of the admission review process. Students admitted to the program will also receive information of their merit scholarship offer and its terms at the time of acceptance.

This award is both in recognition of the significant, increasing demand for public health professionals in the U.S. caused by an aging population and a growing emphasis on health promotion and preventative care, along with the potential challenges prospective students will face in funding their graduate studies as a result of the termination of the Grad PLUS loan in July of 2026.

FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID

GRADUATE DIRECT UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN

Graduate students may be eligible to borrow up to $20,500 in Unsubsidized Federal Direct loan.  You must complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be eligible for federal Direct Graduate Loans.  The Unsubsidized Direct Loan is included in your financial aid offer.  If you do not wish to borrow the loan, you are able to decline the loan in your myPugetSound portal.

  • Interest begins accumulating as soon as the funds are disbursed to the university on your behalf.
  • A 1.057% loan origination fee will be deducted from the principle borrowed.
    • The loan origination fee is provided to the servicer of the loan
  • Under the Federal Direct Student Loan program, the federal government serves as the lender and the interest rate varies based on disbursement date but then is fixed for the life of the loan. View a chart to determine interest rates and loan origination fees.
  • The standard repayment period is 10 years.  Payments are deferred until six months after you cease to be enrolled at least half time, although interest continues to accrue.
  • You can expect to hear from your lender/lenders about 30-45 days before the first payment is due. If you don’t hear from your lender, it is your responsibility to contact them.
  • Unsure of your loan servicer?  Visit studentaid.gov/servicer to learn about the role that student loan servicers play in the repayment process and which servicer handles your PLUS loan. It is possible that you have more than one lender, which means you will have more than one lender to repay.
