Anja Stokes '19

Anja Stokes is an International Political Economy major and Environmental Policy and Decision Making minor from Portland, Oregon. Anja participated in the Puget Sound Outdoors program and volunteered at New Connections, a non-profit organization in Tacoma that provides support for women post-incarceration, helping them reintegrate into society.  While studying abroad in Tanzania, with the SIT Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology Program, Anja completed an independent study project on both the impacts of climate change on farmer livelihoods, and mitigation strategies adopted by farmers in two regions of Tanzania.  When studying in Tanzania, Anja became interested in the impacts of tourism.  Anja's thesis project,Tradeoffs Associated with Tourism as a Rural Development Strategy in Low-Income Countries, explores the relationship between community-based tourism (CBT) and cultural change in rural Tanzania.
