African American Studies hosts alum and charter member of the UPS Black Student Union, Louis Smith ‘69, to share insights from his experiences as one of the first Black student-athletes at Puget Sound during the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s.
African American Studies in co-sponsorship with the Race and Pedagogy Institute and ASUPS hosted Dr. Joy DeGruy for the close of Black History Month. During her lecture she shared insight on Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS), and how it lays the groundwork for how the past has influenced the present, opening discussion of how we can work to eliminate non-productive attitudes, beliefs and behaviors developed to cope and survive traumatic periods throughout time, up to modern day racial terrorism.
