The purpose of this page is to give you some practical information about the School of Music. Please feel welcome to come to the Music Office for more information or answers to your questions.

Applied Music Lessons
Registration for lessons takes place through the Music Office; it is not handled through the registrar’s office and cannot be done online. Students must be registered for lessons by the beginning of each semester. Continuing students will arrange registration for lessons for the next term with their applied music instructor. Students taking half hour studio lessons are registered for .25 unit and are charged a $200 fee each semester. Students taking hour studio lessons are registered for .50 unit or 1.00 unit, depending upon whether a student is preparing for a degree required recital, and are charged a $400 fee each semester.

Students majoring or minoring in Music have a requirement to be registered in an appropriate university ensemble. Students registering for an ensemble scheduled to rehearse at least three hours per week will register for .50 activity unit while those students registering for an ensemble scheduled to rehearse less than three hours per week will register for .25 activity unit. Music ensembles are graded on a pass/fail basis.

All students registered for applied music are required to perform a jury examination as the final exam for applied music lessons. For more information, see the Jury Examination page.

Recital performance options are available throughout the school year. Noon Convocation Student Performances are held on selected Wednesdays each semester. There are also afternoon and evening recitals, chamber music concerts and ensemble performances. For more information, see the Recital Information page.

CWMEA (Collegiate Washington Music Educators' Association)
CWMEA, a state chapter of NAfME, represents all those on campus who have an interest in music education. The club hosts weekly guest lectures on topics in music performance, history, and pedagogy with the aim of furthering the knowledge of our members. The club also travels to the annual music education conference that occurs in the Northwest in order to network with music professionals and gain an understanding of relevant issues in the music classroom today. Collaborative Pianist
Collaborative Pianists are available for music lessons, juries, and recitals. Please check with your applied music instructor at the beginning of the term to begin making arrangements for a collaborative pianist for the semester.

Honorary Societies
The School of Music has a chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, a women’s music fraternity.

Special Awards
Each Spring the School of Music faculty select students for endowed music scholarships. These awards recognize special contributions or achievement of continuing students. There are approximately 25 awards annually. Students receive notification of these awards, which are applied to the following academic year, in late spring.

Jacobsen Series and Faculty Recitals
School of Music faculty present solo and chamber concerts throughout the academic year. Complimentary tickets are available to Puget Sound students at the Wheelock Information Center with student ID.

Student Resources

Electronic Keyboard Lab
The Electronic Keyboard Lab is located in Room 215. There are 14 Kurzweil pianos with full, weighted keyboards, in addition to 5 MIDI work stations.

Electronic Music Lab
The Electronic Music Lab is located in Room 314 of the Music Building. All requests for use are handled by Professor Rob Hutchinson.

Lockers are available for instrumentalists participating in the School of Music program. These are free, and are issued through the Music Office.

Practice Rooms
Practice rooms are available for Puget Sound students currently enrolled in music. The following practice rooms require special authorization:
Room 026—Harp
Rooms 023, 034—Keyboard majors only
Room 035, 038—Percussion
Room 015—Organ and Chamber Music

Music Building Use

Music Building
Summer 2023 Hours:

The Music Building is open from 7:30am to 8:30pm Monday - Friday, and 8am - 8pm on Saturday - Sunday.

Those with swipe access to the building can enter past those times. 

Music Office Equipment
There is a phone located in the basement of the Music Building for campus-only calls. Office equipment such as stapler, 3-hole punch, paper cutter, etc., is available on the counter in the Music Office. The bulletin boards across the hall from the Music Office and on the south end of the lockers can be used to post notices for recitals or other music events. Nothing should be taped to walls, glass entrance door surfaces, doors, or lockers. Use of the copy machine is for faculty and staff only. NO copying of music will be allowed that violates copyright. Copy machines are available in Collins Library for student use.

Music Library
All books on music, scores and recordings are in Collins Library on the mezzanine level. The librarians are there to help you with finding resources, interlibrary loans or other services related to your academic work.

Classroom and Rehearsal Room Use
Use of any classroom or rehearsal room, at any time, during school hours, evenings or weekends, must be scheduled by the Music Office. Email to make a reservation. It is strongly advised to make your reservations as far in advance as possible as rooms and space are limited. Coursework-related space requests for ensemble, chamber, or other academic work will take precedence over extracurricular requests, although students can also reserve rooms extracurricular music-related purposes. When you are finished with the room, please be sure to leave it the way you found it so it will be ready for the next class or user. All furniture is to be set up as it was before you used the room.

Concert Hall Scheduling/Use
To request use of the Concert Hall, at least three weeks in advance of your event, please contact the Concert Hall Technical Director, Greg Hearns. Please consult the recitals page for information concerning the scheduling of required and non-required student recitals.

Information for Majors

A detailed plan of study for your chosen curriculum in the School of Music is available online. Details regarding degree programs and requirements in the major are in the university Bulletin. Make sure you are familiar with this information, and work closely with your academic advisor(s) in planning your curriculum.

Recital Attendance
All freshman and sophomore music majors must register for MUS 109 (Recital Attendance), and juniors and seniors must register for MUS 309 (Recital Attendance). This requirement appears in the university Bulletin under Requirements for the Major. The fulfillment of the no-credit requirement will be reflected as a P/F grade on your transcript.

Advising Assignments
Each student majoring in music is advised by a music faculty member. All freshman students are advised within the freshman advising system—advisors being Professors Robert Hutchinson and Gwynne Brown. At the end of the Spring semester, freshman students will be assigned to a music faculty advisor. Usually each music student is advised by the head of their major area (music education, voice performance, etc.).
