Description

The Kathryn Irene Rodgers Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. J. Bruce Rodgers, who was Professor of Music at the university and who served as Director of the School of Music. The award was established in memory of his wife, Kathryn Irene Rodgers, who was a student in the first Writing Institute class taught by Rosemary Van Arsdel at the university in 1970. Mrs. Rodgers was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization and the Association of Professional Writers and Editors, serving as president of the latter organization in 1978-79. The Rodgers Scholarship is given annually to an outstanding senior English major or minor who intends to pursue a career in professional writing.

 

Scholarship Amount

$2000 in financial aid applied to the academic year of award

 

Eligibility

Applications are invited from those students who:

  • are a senior English major or minor at the time of application (applicants who have applied for graduation in the academic year of award but will officially complete degree requirements in the subsequent fall term are also eligible)
  • intend to pursue a career in professional writing or editing

 

Application Instructions

Respond to the following:

  1. What kind of career do you intend on pursuing after graduation, and what ideas and experiences have informed this direction? (approx. 100-150 words)
  2. Write a statement that reflects on some of the ways you might translate the analytic, creative, and/or multimodal writing skills you have developed as an English major or minor into a career that has a substantial writing component. Feel free to discuss both anticipated challenges and seamless transfers. (approx. 250-300 words)
