Instructor Samuel Powell

Visiting Instructor, Greek, Latin & Ancient Mediterranean Studies

Samuel Powell specializes in ancient Greek religion, drama, and ethnic identity. He has taught courses on Attic and Homeric Greek, epic, myth, and Greek history. Powell's research focuses on the use of myth as a political tool for shaping morality and social hierarchy. His dissertation, "Strangers at the Gates: Myth and Ethnic Identity in Attic Tragedy," examines how ancient playwrights modified mythical narratives to address threats against Athenian hegemony. Powell further explores the role of myth in shaping ancient and modern ethnicity through his forthcoming chapter in the Palgrave Handbook of Classics in Africa, "The Rhetoric of Oppression: Colonial Mythmaking in Aeschylus' Suppliants and Modern Global Africa." He is excited to be a part of the Puget Sound community and grow alongside its faculty and students alike.
