This course introduces music education majors to the fundamentals of string pedagogy and performance, with an emphasis on developing teaching proficiency across the violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Students will learn posture and instrument setup, bow hold and stroke types, left-hand position and shifting, tone production, intonation, tuning, and basic instrument maintenance. The course emphasizes culturally responsive pedagogy, diagnostic listening, error detection, and effective instructional strategies for heterogeneous classroom and ensemble settings. Students will gain practical experience through in-class performance, peer teaching, and applied exercises designed to strengthen both individual competence and pedagogical versatility. By the end of the semester, students will demonstrate a working knowledge of string techniques sufficient to teach beginning and intermediate players in school orchestra and general music programs.
