This course is about beginnings. Its main focus is the origin stories in the biblical book of Genesis, which students read through the lenses of history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, religious studies, and theology, and in terms of its reference over the past two centuries in debates concerning faith, science, human flourishing, and social and environmental justice. As this is a book that raises age-old questions about knowledge, purpose, and freedom, its study will also provide some opportunities to reflect on other kinds of beginnings, namely those to do with embarking on and navigating a liberal arts education, both within and beyond the academy.
